Would MK6 Golf R springs work on my Sportwagen TDI? The rear suspension is the same as the GTI if that matters. I found a set of R springs for $50 + shipping on VWVortex and I am going to snag them if they are compatible

The rear on the Sportwagen is a bit heavier though right? Not sure if it's a good idea..

I would not.

TDI up front plus wagon means springs are probably set up for completely different weights

Overall I think they are about the same...

Golf R 2013 was 3325 lbs with 59/41 weight distribution

2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI is 3283 with 58/42 weight distribution...

Um I just posted that the R has 59/41 weight distribution with 3325 lbs while the JSW TDI is 3300 lbs with 58/42 weight distribution...

But are the springs themselves compatible with the struts?

hmm. I wouldnt.

I get the feeling the rear is different as the R had AWD....

AFAIK yes. VW tend to use parts that fit here and there on this and that.. But I can't be certain, sorry..

All I would be getting would be the springs... the heavy rear glass, hatch, and full sized spare (along with the gas tank being behind the rear wheels) would offset that. The reason it is not recommended for the Golf is because the Golf doesn't have any of that

Well the GTI rear sway bar did fit... but IDK :'(

THE R SPRINGS WILL FIT... however it depends on whether the dampers are stiff enough...

I don't know whether they are or not

I wish I could've given you some help.. I'm somewhat sure it WILL fit.. but why don't you just call your local VW dealership?

Because they will ask for my VIN number and then tell me since they aren't the same model they won't be compatible... ask me how I know >:(

i'm not refering to that.

i'm refering to the fact that its a different axle in the back, and that its design will be completely different then the JSW ( kinda like how the base jetta and the GLI had TOTALLY different suspension setups for a year or 2)

If they fit as in physically FIT it won't matter if the shocks are soft or stiff. It WILL have an impact on how the car behaves for sure.. but it's not a huge problem.

Ahh.. Sorry.. I'm used to Norwegian dealers.. They don't need the VIN.. they just need to know what year and model.

So the springs have different spring rates...

They fit correctly. It's the ride quality that would be the problem

Well... they should fit, but the shock absorbers are a bit on the softer side. Except for the fact that the wagon's are a bit stiffer than the normal Golf's

Are you satisfied with the ride and handling, or is there a reason to tighten things up?

I want to lower the center of gravity AKA reduce body roll and lower it

I don't really like the gap between the tires and body panels

Also, I want to have the effect of a front swaybar upgrade without actually upgrading the sway bar

If I understand correctly, what you want to do might result in the tires contacting the underside of the wheel wells? Otherwise, why not do it? As long as you're not voiding your warranty.

Damn I miss owning/working on a car.

Oh no, it wouldn't lower it that much! It would lower it like 1 to 1.5 inches at most...

Also, warranty? You mean the 36k mile one? Yeah, we put 35k miles on it in the first year. I'm pretty sure 83k miles is out of warranty ;)

Then you are good to go. Curious - why not replace the sway bar as well?

I installed an OEM 2012 GTI rear swaybar today actually... and it only took me about 45 minutes or so

Take photos of the parts/work underway! As I said - live in Manhattan, rental cars only, no opportunity to work on a car like I used to ... live vicariously through you guys.
